Jane Matovu Foundation was founded in honour of Ms. Jane Matovu, a widow who educated all her five children to university level through sacrifice, hard work, and an unshakable belief in education.
Jane’s story is the moral foundation of this organisation. Like many girls of her generation, she did not receive formal educational qualifications beyond basic numeracy and arithmetic. Yet she understood the long-term value of education more deeply than many who had been to school. When her husband passed away while all their children were still in primary school, Jane faced a future filled with uncertainty. Her only reliable source of income was small-scale agriculture, and the harvest was often too small or too unpredictable to cover school fees for five children.
Despite these difficulties, Jane made a deliberate choice: her children would remain in school. One of her children later described this sacrifice simply and powerfully: “Mum postponed consumption for our stay in school.” She endured long hours of manual labour on her farm, borrowed when she had no other option, and carried the burden of school fees even when payments were late and interest rates were high.
“You don’t have to be rich to take children to school—it only requires sacrifice.”
Through courage, persistence, and long-term vision, Jane educated all her children through high school and college, and each of them attained at least a university degree. Her commitment did not end with her own children. She also stepped in to support orphaned nieces and nephews, giving more children the opportunity to imagine a better future.
Community Leadership
Jane has remained deeply active in her grassroots community. She has served as village chairwoman since 2015 and has been involved in women’s savings groups that promote financial discipline and women’s empowerment. She has also served as a Village Health Volunteer and Ministry of Health contact person, supporting women and children through basic health guidance and first-aid assistance.

Jane is an education heroine, champion, influencer, leader, volunteer, and activist whose legacy deserves to live on.
