Family Empowerment
The Jane Matovu Foundation recognises that a child’s education is closely connected to the economic strength of the family behind that child. Many children do not drop out because they lack ability or ambition; they drop out because their families lack reliable income. For this reason, the Foundation supports vulnerable families with practical livelihood tools, basic capital, and farm implements that can help them increase household income and move gradually towards self-reliance.
Families may receive start-up support for income-generating activities such as poultry, piggery, livestock rearing, or the cultivation of high-value crops including coffee, bananas, maize, and other locally suitable crops. Beneficiaries are selected carefully, based on demonstrated need, existing skills, farming history, interest, capacity to manage the project, and willingness to use part of the proceeds to support their children’s education.
The aim is not to create dependency, but to strengthen families so that they can contribute to school fees, scholastic materials, uniforms, and other mandatory school requirements over time. Families supported through this program are expected to participate actively, learn basic enterprise management, save, reinvest, and gradually share responsibility for the education of their children.
Where possible, the Foundation will also encourage risk-management practices, including agricultural insurance or other safeguards against disease outbreaks, drought, floods, and extreme weather. By empowering families economically, the Foundation strengthens the home environment in which children learn, grow, and pursue their future.
