In many African cultures, community is central to the identity, survival, and flourishing of the individual.

People do not face life’s challenges alone. Poverty, domestic violence, school dropout, local crime, unemployment, illness, and family breakdown are often experienced and addressed collectively. The Jane Matovu Foundation seeks to build on this communitarian spirit by encouraging families, neighbours, local leaders, schools, and well-wishers to work together in solving the challenges affecting vulnerable children and households in Lwengo District.

The Foundation understands that education is strongest when the community values it. A child is more likely to remain in school when parents, guardians, teachers, religious leaders, neighbours, and local leaders all reinforce the importance of learning. Likewise, family empowerment is more sustainable when communities share knowledge, support each other’s enterprises, and hold one another accountable.

Through community engagement, the Foundation hopes to nurture a culture in which vulnerable families are not isolated and children are not left behind. Our long-term vision is to help build communities where education, family responsibility, mutual support, and hope become shared values.
